 Nevada Legislature Starts February 5th

We NEED your E-Mail Address!

The Nevada Legislature’s 2007 starts on February 5th and runs through June 5th.  I have graciously been offered a place to stay in Carson City and I am planning to be there through the entire Legislature.  I am planning to take Ruth, my 91-year old mother, with me.  I will be coming home on weekends as often as possible, but staying in Carson during the week will allow me to be there every day.

In addition, our lobbying team State Vice President Lynn Chapman, Dave Schumann, John Wagner and others are ready for the grueling 4 months of the Legislature.  As always, we will be cooperating with other organizations—working with them whenever we can to increase our effectiveness on particular issues.

We need your help.  The Legislature moves very fast.  Although I plan to continue my monthly newsletter which will be filled with info on the Legislature, we must be able to send Legislative alerts by e-mail because of time restraints.  We will also be posting our Legislative calendar and alerts on the website at www.nevadafamilies.org but that usually takes a day or so--- so please send us your current e-mail address if you wish to receive the Alerts. AND update us on any changes to your e-mail address.

We need your e-mail address so we can send Legislative alerts.  You can mail them to us in the enclosed envelope or email them to director@nevadafamilies.org with “Leg alerts” in the subject line.  Please be sure to include your name and county with the message.

We simply are not nearly as effective without your participation!!!  In addition, please go to www.leg.state.nv.us then on the right hand side go to “Who is my Legislature” and find out who your State Assemblyman is and who your State Senator is.  That way you will be able to specifically contact your own Assemblyman or Senator as their constituents, as well as contacting other Legislators.

There are already over 1,100 bills and bill draft requests filed.  I have reviewed those and found fo far 265 we need to track.  Wow!  Here we go again. There are bills on revising provisions governing drivers’ licenses, which is always a concern because of those trying to give them to illegals. Asm. Denis has a bill to conduct a study of the fiscal impact of undocumented immigrants in Nevada. So far, there are no bills denying the right of conscience to pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for abortion inducing drugs, but we are on the lookout as they were hidden in other bills the last two sessions. There are many bills on eminent domain (property rights), taxes and state budgeting, regulation of firearms and concealed carry laws, election laws, and petitioning (which was our biggest headache last session) and candidate disclosure which can jeopardize free speech, school choice and education, appointing not electing judges, identity theft, water, salary increases for elected officials, state lottery, “confidentiality” of medical records, livestock & brand law, parental rights, and one Senator Cegavske introduced at my request placing checks on electronic voting machines to protect us against ballot fraud….and on and on it goes! Please help by sending us your E-mail address!

Nevada Families Eagle Forum Newsletter is published 12 times a year. The Subscription price is $25.00.

We need your E-mail address if we are to contact you on critical issues during Legislature starting Feb. 5, 2007.

 Free Speech under Threat—Temporary Reprieve

Thankfully, on January 18th, the US Senate voted 55-43 adopting the Bennett Amendment, which removed the grassroots lobbying provisions of S.1, the Lobbying Transparency and Accountability Act.  According to Jay Sekulow and the American Center for Law & Justice, this bill sponsored by Harry Reid would have required churches and public interest organizations like Eagle Forum to register as grassroots lobbyists and impose horrendous registration and reporting requirements including huge fines up to $100,000 for failure to file.

What about the Constitutional protection that “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech.”  I guess the US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid never heard of that provision.   There was an incredible outcry against the bill created by no less than grassroots lobbying (by the people) of our Congress.  Thankfully, the amendment passed and Section 220 on grassroots lobbying was deleted.

Instead of reforming Congress this bill would have silenced the people.  Jay Sekulow said, “… this would have been one of the most significant restrictions placed on the freedom of political expressions in our Nation’s history.”   Wow!

The House will take up the Grassroots Lobbying measure next.

Let our Congressmen know now that you oppose restrictions and regulations on grassroots lobbying, which is lobbying by the American people and violates free speech and freedom of association. See Contact info below. *

But, the “Transparency” SCAM continues.  THE "REID AMENDMENT"

In the Nevada Concerned Citizen Report of Jan. 19, 2007 we read, “There was another amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma, nicknamed the "Reid Amendment" after Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, whose family members have benefited richly from their close ties to the Nevada Democrat.  This amendment would have prohibited senators from requesting or promoting earmarks that would financially benefit themselves, their families, their staff members or their staff members' families.

The Senate refused to debate or allow a recorded vote on the "Reid Amendment". (No surprise)

"Any conference report on this bill that includes a ban on $20 meals but doesn't include a ban on $100 million earmarks that financially benefit politicians, their families or their staff members will be an insult to the intelligence of every single taxpayer," said Sen. Coburn.  "Any reform bill that allows the 'earmark favor factory' to continue to dole out goodies for the financial benefit of politicians and their staff members is a reform bill in name only." End

Congressman Heller—No Surprise on Stem Cell Research

When newly elected Congressman Dean Heller voted with the Democrats for Stem Cell Research it was no surprise.  Heller has always been pro-abortion.  Unfortunately, most people never look closely enough before casting their ballots.  Heller also, worked very hard for bigger government as the Secretary of State. Surely we’ll have plenty of opportunity to be disappointed if not surprised at Heller’s performance in Washington D.C.
